The Egret, Eel, and the Heron
We had company for a few days as Melisa, Gavin, and Titus flew down to the warm Florida weather. Gavin loves seeing wildlife, so we visited Myakka River State Park.
We noticed this Great Egret with an eel in its mouth as we approached the wetland area. I've seen them eat some large fish but not any eels. This should be interesting to watch.
It didn't take long for the big Blue Heron to perk up and notice the catch, and I figured something was about to happen.
The Egret was having difficulty figuring out how it would swallow the eel. This picture looked like the eel had the upper hand on the Egrets head.
The Heron took flight and flew across the wetland towards the Egret. It looked serious about taking the eel from the Egret.
As the Heron approached, the Egret took flight and landed on the other side of the wetland.
The Heron again took flight towards the Egret, but the Egret had seen it coming and again moved to another area.
By the time the Heron landed and started to come back across the wetland, the Egret had swallowed the eel. Gavin saw firsthand how these large birds would do anything to get a meal, including trying to steal a catch from another bird.
Photography should be fun! It's not about the phone or camera brand you're using. Remember, your best photographs result from one thing, making an effort to get out and shoot.
