I took advantage of the unseasonable warm weather with a trip to the Kellogg Bird Sanctuary. I’ve never been there in the winter, but sunny and 50 degrees in January just makes you want to get outside. I was not surprised to see four other photographers shooting and soaking in the sunshine. I started shooting some swans, what a different look on the ice.
I started walking along the shoreline and concentrated on shooting some mallards in flight. It’s always a challenge shooting these fast little ducks. I managed to get a few good ones that I was happy with.
I watched as the ducks played in and around the open water. They seemed to be enjoying the beautiful day as much as I did.
In the summer I like to walk the trail around Wintergreen Lake. I started down the trail around the east side of the lake. It was different, yet peaceful, with no leaves or other people walking. I had not planned on walking around the whole lake, but before I knew it, I was half way around the lake. I decided what the heck, I may not get another chance until spring.
I approached the end of trail leading out of the sanctuary I spotted this cardinal feeding. I took a few minutes to watch and take a few pictures.
What a perfect way to end a winter afternoon at the sanctuary.
