Winter is back, so what can you do on a cold Saturday night in Michigan? That’s easy, you go to the Franke Center in Marshall for their annual Winter Blues Festival.
The Big Boss Band played downstairs during dinner. Having the four-piece band play for almost two hours was a great way to kick off the festival. The crowd seemed impressed hearing a mix of blues and rock classics. For me it was their originals, which I enjoyed. It was clear that this is a very talented group of musicians. I wish I had taken a little more time photographing them, but I’m sure I’ll get another chance soon.
Jake Kershaw and his band opened the main stage around 7 pm. It was Jake’s first time playing at the Franke Center. Being from Marshall you could tell he was excited. Jake did not disappoint, the seventeen-year-old guitar wiz had the sell out crowd standing on their feet.
His style of hard driving blues riffs and vocals are something you just don’t see often from a seventeen year-old. How can anyone play that good at seventeen? He ended the electrifying set with the crowd cheering, wanting more.
Harper the festival headliner took the stage and showed why he’s a fan favorite at the Franke Center. Peter Harper, known as just Harper, originates from Australia. He plays the didgeridoo, harmonica, and displays great stage presence.
Harper’s deep soulful voice has a rhythmic blues sound that is very unique and entertaining. He talked about “getting” his music, and I can hear this in his music.
I also enjoyed the band, Midwest kind. All were excellent musicians and perfectly complimented Harper.
Thank you Franke Center for another great winter blues festival.
