I love going to the bird sanctuary in late fall, photographing the fall colors surrounding Wintergreen lake. I arrived before sunrise hoping to catch the golden hour. It was chilly! I’m sure glad I dressed warm. As the sun rose above the tree line, the colors became vibrant.
I was surprised to see mostly Trumpeter Swans, Geese and Mallard ducks. The fall migration normally provides me the opportunity to photograph some of the uncommon species. I only saw a few Buffleheads, no Hooded Merganser, Lesser Scaup, Redhead or even a Wood Ducks. I decided to focus my efforts on trying to take photographs that featured warm, vibrant colors surrounding the waterfowl.
The native Trumpeter Swan, with their huge wingspan, has a loud trumpet like call. They fly in a circler path, before gliding feet first into the water. I focused on following them, hoping they would fly in front of the beautiful fall colors. With some patience, I was happy with my results.
The smaller, fast, Mallard duck poses a greater challenge to photograph. They seem to come out of nowhere, flying in irregular patterns. I did my best to track them in my cameras viewfinder; I really struggled to get a sharp photograph.
Another enjoyable morning, in the outdoors, photographing nature’s beauty.
