I love riding to the Sturgis Rally. The best part is it’s held in the black hills of South Dakota. The area is rich in history with places like Mount Rushmore, The Badlands, Custer Park, Spearfish Canyon and The Devil’s Tower.
Custer State Park is a very diverse area. It’s famous for its bison herds, other wildlife, scenic drives and challenging roads.
We entered the park at Iron Mountain Road. It is a very challenging road to ride, featuring three tunnels with views of Mount Rushmore. Iron Mountain Road leads to the wildlife loop. The scenic loop with views of large open areas and a lot of wildlife is a very enjoyable ride . We finished the park riding Needles Highway, noted for its hairpin turns and natural beauty.
The Badlands National Park with its rugged beauty is one of my favorite rides in South Dakota. The park has 244,000 acres with striking geologic deposits, sharply eroded pinnacles and the largest protected grass prairie in the United States.
Riding through the park gives me an eerie feeling. I think about what it would look like with the Native Americans living in the area. The Lakota gave this land its name, “Mako Sica,” meaning, “land bad.”
Spearfish Canyon twist through a 19-mile gorge. With thousand feet high limestone cliffs, deep valleys and waterfalls, it’s a rider’s paradise. The canyon is a less challenging ride with long gentle sweeping curves that seem to never end.
We hiked about a mile to Roughlock Falls. To our surprise our hike led us past steep limestone cliffs, large vistas of wildflowers to upper and lower falls.
The Devil’s Tower in Wyoming is considered sacred to the Northern Plains Indians and other tribes. There is several routes to the national monument. We took scenic highway 34 through Belle Fourche in to Wyoming.
You really get to appreciate its size as it becomes visible from many miles away. As you approach the monument you start to notice hundreds of parallel cracks, making it one of the finest climbing areas in North America.
