I just purchase a new Cannon M5 mirrorless camera. My main purpose for using the camera is to take it on my motorcycle. Mirrorless cameras are becoming more popular as the baby boomers are looking for smaller and lighter equipment. I took a trip to the Kellogg Bird Sanctuary to see how it would work taking some close ups of wildlife.
I started taking some pictures and as I was walking around I spotted this duck that I had never seen before. My first thought was it’s a Wood duck, but I later discovered it was a Mandarin duck
After coming home and researching the Mandarin I found out that they are not from around here. In fact, not even native in the U.S. This led me to think, how did it get to the sanctuary?
I went back to the sanctuary and enquired about the Mandarin. They told me that it was found injured locally by the DNR while they were banding Wood ducks. It cannot be released so now it’s home is the sanctuary. They named it Manny the Mandarin.
There was also a large population on swans at the sanctuary. It was cold but at least the sun was out. The swans seemed to sense the sun, as they were very active.
I always like to watch the Mallards. I spent about two hours, as they also seemed to be enjoying the sunshine. My new camera did a pretty good job with static wildlife just swimming around. It’s a lot harder to capture birds in flight with the M5. I’ll leave that to my full size DLSR.
After an exciting day at the bird sanctuary I was blessed with a beautiful sunset over Lee Lake.
I’m still waiting for some spring-like weather!
