My grandsons Landen and Gavin were wrestling in Traverse City so I decided to leave a few days early and visit my sister Karen. The weather was unseasonable warm, with little snow cover for the end of February.
I was there before Christmas and had the chance to photograph two snowy owls. I really wanted to find them again. I wanted to photograph one if flight. We searched Saturday morning for over two hours without seeing a single snowy owl. We did see two bald eagles from afar sitting in a treetop.
We decided to head for Empire to photograph the Lake Michigan shoreline at the beach. It was mostly sunny early afternoon but the clouds started to roll in. Our plan was to hopefully get some sunset pictures over the lake.
The snow along the shoreline, with the clouds moving in, made for some dramatic looking photographs.
After an hour photographing the lake and shoreline from different angles, we decided to go back to Empire and have some dinner hoping that just maybe the skies would clear for a sunset.
As we walked into Fiendly’s, a historic restaurant in downtown Empire, it felt really strange to have the restaurant almost to ourselves. During the summer months you normally have a hard time even finding a table.
After dinner we headed back to the beach only to find the clouds had thickened. We stayed around for a little while but decided it was time to head back to Traverse City, there would be no sunset pictures this evening.
I had a great time visiting Karen and we even got to see the boys wrestle on Sunday.
