Bluesman James Milton Campbell Jr., better known as Little Milton. He enjoyed success as a guitar player, songwriter and singer. In 1988 Milton was inducted in the Blues Hall of Fame and won a W.C. Handy Award. I saw Little Milton at the 2003 Kalamazoo Blues Festival. He had great stage presence and a clear deep voice. He put on a great show.
Michael was known for his hard driving, guitar playing music. A singer, songwriter with hits "Everybody's Got Their Hand Out”, and "I Smell Smoke”. I saw Michael play on several occasions. He was a big man that seemed to dwarf his guitar. Michael was always crowd favorite.
Johnnie Bassett a Detroit-based American electric blues guitarist, singer, and songwriter. He worked for decades primarily as a session musician. By the 1990s Bassett had formed his own band. He released seven albums in his lifetime. Detroiter’s called him “Oh So Smooth” for his smooth style of guitar playing. I attended two shows at the Franke Center in Marshall and was invited to an after show party with him. Johnnie was a true gentleman.
Robert was known for founding the Ohio Untouchables, the band that later would become the Ohio Players. He played the guitar with a unique tone soaked in vibrato coming from the Magnatone amplifier. Robert was a favorite on WRKR Sunday Blues with DJ Marty Spaulding. He talked with Robert and his wife many times on the show and helped Robert back on stage with several shows in Michigan. I remember him having such a unique style and tone. Must have been that Magnatone….
Carey was an American blues musician who played harmonica in the Chicago blues style. I watched him perform only once at the Kalamazoo Blues Festival. He played a nice set yet the crowd really didn’t seem to appreciate his harp playing.
I’ve Got the Blues….
