As the temperature warmed up I decided to go to my favorite local birding site, the Kellogg Bird Sanctuary. Wintergreen Lake was frozen over except where the bubblers are keeping the water open for the wildlife that’s still migrating and stay at the Sanctuary throughout the year.
As I walked up to the lake there was another photographer setup up in front of the open water. He was feeding the waterfowl corn and they were liking it.
I set up my gear about 25 yards from him and starting shooting. As I was shooting Geese and Mallards I noticed something different in the water. As I look closer it was a male Wood Duck. I've never seen one so close, they normally stay farther out in the lake. He must have been hungry as he was enjoying the corn.
I was watching the ducks flying from the cove to my left to the open water to feed. I moved about halfway down toward the cove and started to track them flying going back and forth. The conditions were perfect, the sun was lighting up the ducks as they flew by. Man, do these Mallards fly fast! I was pretty happy with the results, even though my keeper rate was pretty low.
Photography should be fun! It's not about the phone or camera brand you're using. Always remember, your best photographs are the result of one thing, making an effort to get out and shoot.
Comments always welcomed.
